Health & Recreation

Overview

Health:

Grade 6 - Students participate in the Calmer Choice Mindful Awareness curriculum. Other objectives of the Health curriculum include self-esteem, body systems, and drug and alcohol prevention.

Grade 7 & 8 - This curriculum covers three areas of personal health - physical, emotional, and social well- being. A major objective is for students to understand that these three areas are interconnected in achieving overall wellness. Classes are discussion-based with various activities, including role play and debate. We strive to make the health classroom a place where students feel safe in talking and learning about their own personal health.

Physical Education:

All Grades- Connecting with the health class, the Physical Education program focuses on teamwork (social well-being), supportive play (emotional health), fitness (physical health) and fun (all three).

Calmer Choice

In sixth grade health our students participate in the Calmer Choice curriculum. This curriculum is a universal prevention curriculum committed to teaching young people how to effectively and safely manage stress and resolve conflict so that they live happy, healthy and successful lives. The goal is to provide skills that will diminish the risk of violence, substance abuse, and other self-destructive behaviors. Many of these skills are centered on "mindful awareness" and being in the moment.

Teachers at CCLCS work tirelessly to provide our students with experiences through which they will learn. By learning to be more in the moment students will be able to get more from each of these experiences. As many of you are aware, I'm sure, it's not easy to stay in the moment. We get lost in thoughts of what already happened or what is going to happen and when we're lost in those thoughts, we miss what's happening right now. So as a way to help our students learn these lessons, the Calmer Choice lessons will be shared via Notes at Home so we are learning with the greater school community.

Any parents, grandparents, siblings, (7th and 8th grade families welcome too!!) who would be interested in going through the lesson, just as the kids do, please join me Friday afternoons at 3:15. Each lesson is around 45-50 minutes. We would love to share them with you all!
