MARINE PLANKTON PROJECT

Zooplankton

Guide to Marine Plankton of Cape Cod
Ctenophora

General Description (by students )

Ctenophores, known as comb jellies, are a type of zooplankton that are visible without a microscope. They all have some sort of comb, made of fused cilia, that from the side look like eyelashes. Some classes of Ctenophores have trailing tentacles that they use to collect food. Ctenophores are monoecious (both sexes are in one individual). If you keep a Ctenophore isolated overnight, it might release fertilized eggs. In a few days, you will start to see their cydippid larva. We saw both adult and larval Ctenophores in the plankton.
