Vertebrates are animals that have back bones such as fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. They are represented in tha plankton by eggs and newly hatched fish larvae, The new larvae go from being drifters to being active swimmers. You know a fish larvae by its eyes, backbone, gill slits, heart, and muscle bundles.
