Guide to Marine Plankton of Cape Cod
Phytoplankton
Plankton in Greek means "wandering" and refers to organisms that drift in the ocean. The plants in the plankton are called phytoplankton. Phytoplankton form the base of the food web (of the ocean), and are often referred to as the pasture of the ocean. Phytoplankton have many different appearances. Some of them are disks, rods, chains, and spines. The two types of phytoplankton that we observed were diatoms and dinoflagolates.
