MARINE PLANKTON PROJECT

Collecting Marine Plankton

A plankton net is a cone shaped net made of really fine mesh that is used to collect plankton. You tow it by pulling it through the water, or hanging it from a bridge over moving water. When you tow the net it is important not to drag it on the bottom and to submerge the opening. The plankton that gets into the net travels down into the sample bucket. When you are finished with the tow, pull in the net and detatch your sample bucket. The species that you collect are very delicate so look at them right away. Plankton last only about a day.
