Charter school looking at land in Brewster
By Matt Belson
Brewster - While the focus of the public hearing Monday centered on Brewster's application to the Cape Cod Commission for nomination of its watershed as a District of Critical Planning Concern, one interesting moment came when Brewster resident Kathy McNamara spoke of her support for the designation.
However, as executive director for Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School, McNamara voiced her concern that the designation would not preclude the school from possibly purchasing land in the area for the site of a new building.
Reading a prepared statement, McNamara said the school understood the need for the protection district and any proposed new school would be built conforming to "green" standards.
After the meeting, McNamara said the school is looking at several parcels in the Brewster watershed but would not elaborate due to ongoing negotiations. "We just wanted to go on the record," said McNamara.
If a parcel is located and purchased, McNamara said students would be actively involved in the design of the new environmentally friendly building as a learning experience.
The school is housed in Bayberry Plaza in Orleans, off Route 6A.
