Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School news: White Mountains trip
ORLEANS - Recently, the eighth-grade class traveled to the White Mountains region of New Hampshire for a three-day field trip filled with fresh air and camaraderie. The purpose of this excursion was three-fold: to gain greater awareness and appreciation of our natural surroundings; to team-build on the cohesiveness of the class as a whole; and to foster greater self-confidence in each individual's ability to reach his or her greatest potential.
The students, teachers and parents arrived last Wednesday at Pinkham Notch Visitors Center and immediately began their team-building activities, along with a short but rigorous hike in the base area. After a hearty supper and a good night's sleep at the Joe Dodge Lodge, the hikers arose early to set out upon their challenging three- to four-mile hike up the mountain. The group divided into two cohorts, with one heading up to the Mitzpah Spring hut, and the other trekking to Carter Notch. Both of these huts are owned and operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club, and the guides who work for this organization led the students up the trails with patience and expertise. Upon arrival at the huts and after another hearty meal, the staff led the students in more educational fun, filled with laughter and great spirit.
The students arose early Friday morning, fresh and ready for their trek back down the mountain. The descent was less taxing than the ascent, and all arrived back at the base with the satisfaction and pride of having accomplished a goal together, along with a new appreciation for the environment, which is a focal point in the school's mission.
The teachers and students would like to especially thank those dedicated parents who took the time and effort to support the school literally every step of the way.
